Formation
At some point, millions of years ago, source rocks inside the earth’s crust were subjected to intense pressures and high temperatures, causing the atoms to recombine into new metamorphic (changed) rocks which included sapphires (corundum). The green hue comes from the presence of iron (FE) in the corundum. Because of the presence of the iron, the green sapphire has a higher density than most other sapphires thus making the green or sapphire mineral the second densest gemstone known to man. The green sapphire gemstone is also known as the stone of tranquility.
