Formation

Green amethyst is produced when heat is applied to a certain type of amethyst. Most amethyst turns yellow, orange or brown when heated, but amethyst containing iron compounds with specific properties (Fe2+ iron compounds) will turn green instead. Some natural sources of green quartz have been found; however, the green amethyst sold as gemstones is heat-treated. The two are the same – it is speculated that heat produced naturally by geological events during the formation of the mineral caused the production of the naturally green deposits. The practice of heat-treating stone is common in the gemological industry, and it does not compromise the value of the resulting coloured stone. It is still a natural gemstone.

Treatment

Green Amethyst is produced by careful heating of Brazilian amethyst stone. The heat treatment of Amethyst between 878 and 1382 degrees F may produce light yellow, red, brown, green or colourless varieties of stones. The result of heat treating these gems are stable, so they hardly require any special care while wearing. But Amethyst Stone should not be steam-cleaned due to their susceptibility to heat.
